Training
Accredited Building Services
recognizes the importance of staff
training so that each employee clearly
understands his or her job functions.
ABS utilizes the Building Service
Contractors Association International
Video and Classroom Training Programs.
Our training program consists of
four elements:
- The video cassette explains and
demonstrates office cleaning procedures.
- The job breakdown sheets provide
trainees with a specific routine
for office cleaning procedures.
- The skills checklist evaluates
how well each person has learned
and pinpoints areas that need further
training.
- The trainer’s manual explains
how to use the program and provides
tips on training office cleaning
procedures.
Classroom
Training
We start our training program with
a classroom session on the videotape.
The following materials are needed.
- trainer’s manual
- job breakdowns
- video cassette player and television
- cleaning specifications for the
building
- flipchart or blackboard
We start the session by showing the
videotape on office cleaning. We stop
the tape at various points to elaborate
on certain procedures and key functions.
After the tape is over, each employee
is given a job breakdown for office
cleaning. The job breakdown is covered
with the employee one step at a time.
We start by covering all the equipment,
chemicals and supplies they’ll
need. We then go over safety procedures.
Once we have covered supplies and
equipment, we go over the cleaning
procedures step by step. We establish
a cleaning routine for each employee:
exactly what they do and in what order.
The trainer then goes over the cleaning
frequencies and establishes a daily
routine.
On-The-Job-Training
The next phase in our training is
on-the-job-training. Using the training
materials as an outline, we demonstrate
and explain in detail each task in
the office cleaning procedure. Whenever
possible, we explain the reasons behind
a certain procedure to help employees
remember.
Equipment
and Supplies
We show the employees where to get
their equipment and supplies and how
to load the janitor carts. The trainer
reviews the specific supplies and
equipment they’ll need to clean
the offices. We stress to employees
that it is very important that they
apply only as much cleaner to surfaces
as they have been instructed to use.
Cleaning
Procedures
We then take the employees to an
office for demonstration and practice.
We demonstrate how trash is pulled
and dumped and liners replaced. We
demonstrate how ashtrays are emptied
and wiped. We cover high and low dusting.
The trainer reviews the cleaning
agents and tools used in the operation
to clean various surfaces. Proper
vacuuming procedures and carpet spot
cleaning are demonstrated. We demonstrate
dust mopping and the various functions
of restroom cleaning.
Security
We review the security procedures
in our operation. Each employee reports
to their supervisor any maintenance
problems such as burned out lights,
etc. We go over any other security
measures such as locking the proper
doors.
Supervised
Practice
Once the cleaning procedures have
been demonstrated, employees are given
a chance to practice these procedures
under supervision. Supervision can
come by a lead worker, supervisor,
or trainer.
Evaluation
Once the employees have been trained
and given supervised practice, the
training is evaluated. We use a skills
checklist to evaluate the employee’s
performance in all areas of office
cleaning and pinpoint areas where
further training is needed.
